(In progress.) The problem with San Francisco, and it is an excellent problem for a city to have, is that it has very exact and fantastic visual landmarks. The Golden Gate, Coit Tower, Lombard Street, the Transamerica tower, the row of Victorian homes, Alcatraz Island, it’s skyline from Oakland/Marin/etc., Cable Cars, Mission Delores, City Hall, The Ferry Building, Golden Gate Park, The Presidio, special areas like China Town, and newer landmarks like the rebuilt De Young Museum, the California Academy of Science, as well as borderline landmarks like Sutro Tower and a Dutch Windmill! There are numerous other possible landmarks, cultures, or symbols too. The objective was not to use any of these. Although, Sutro Tower was of interest by the client as a kind of under-appreciated future Eiffel Tower of the city. The tower is very distinctive but, after exploration, it was decided it was not a direction to take the identity. After sketching many ideas, this was one concept sketch using just typography. The colors would vary from a larger palette of equally vibrant and striking options. This was my proposal for the symbol portion of the identity. It incorporates some of the old and newer harbor history. The stripes represent the sailing ship sails and the Star Spangled banner which flew over the harbor. The star is also from the flag but also represents the one child of many who need help. The pentagon shape is the shape of a famous I.M. Pei designed building on the harbor.
